Chapter 290 : Public Carriage

We left the inn and walked through the village while watching the villagers who had already started working on the fields even though it was still early in the morning.

After a while of walking, we arrived at a large wooden hut with stables next to it. That’s probably something like a station for carriages.

There were several benches inside the hut for passengers to sit while waiting for their carriage.

On one of the benches, there was someone we knew very well sitting with his arms crossed.

「Yo, I’ve been waiting for you guys.」(Kazuul)

「Ara, Kazuul-san. You came to see us off?」(Celine)

「Ahaha! I had something to do nearby, so I thought of coming here to see you guys. Say, Mark, would you sell me some F-grade potions? I drank too much last night, so my head hurts like hell now… I’ll need them a lot, so I think I’ll buy three bottles.」(Kazuul)

Now that he mentions it, his face looked a bit red and he smelled of alcohol. It seems that he drank a lot with the village chief last night.

I took out three bottles of F-grade potion from my Item Box and handed them to Kazuul-san. In exchange, he gave me one gold coin.

When I was about to give him the change, he stopped me.

「No, you can keep the change.」(Kazuul)

「Are you sure?」(Mark)

「Consider it as my thanks for accompanying me to this village. Haha!」(Kazuul)

I should be the one thanking him for taking us to this village, but… I think I should just listen to him and gratefully receive the money.

「Thank you, Kazuul-san.」(Mark)

I thanked him and put the gold coin in my Item Box while watching him drink one of the three bottles of potion.

「Kaaahh~! It’s working! I can feel it! Mark, the potions you made really are awesome!」(Kazuul)

After he drank it, his face gradually looked better.

As always, my potions seem to be as effective as Ukon No Chikara and Shijimi Shuukan in my previous life.

One day, I want to hand Celine a potion and say, “You drank again last night, didn’t you?”

*/TL : Ukon No Chikara/ウコンの力 and Shijimi Shuukan/しじみ習慣 are Japan’s famous anti-hangover medicines.

The line Mark said: “You drank again last night, didn’t you?” / Kinou mo mata nomimashita ne? /昨日も、また飲みましたね?is the famous line in the Shijimi Shuukan commercial. https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm17545944

Kazuul-san stood up from his seat, stretched his body, and then waved at us.

「Well then, I still have work to do. Have a nice trip, you guys~!」(Kazuul)

He then left the hut immediately.

It seems that his main purpose waiting for us here is to buy my potions rather than seeing us off…

Well, that’s fine. We said our goodbyes yesterday after all.

While I was staring at the entrance door where Kazuul-san left, Tio poked my shoulder.

「Say, Mark-kun… Is it just my imagination or did you really take potions out of thin air just now…?」(Tio)

「Ah, I was using my Item Box. It looks weird, though.」(Mark)

「Item Box!? It’s the first time I’ve seen one… That’s a great thing but it makes me worry that some evil adults might kidnap you…」(Tio)

When Tio looked at me with a slightly worried face, Celine patted my head and replied to Tio in my stead.

「He’ll be alright. He’s really good at magic. I told you that he was stronger than me, didn’t I?」(Celine)

「Ah, you did say that last night. I thought you were joking. Hee~ So, Mark-kun, you can use magic and have an Item Box, huh? That’s awesome! I can understand why Ruki told you to protect me on our way to the town.」(Tio)

「Ahaha…」(Mark)

ーーーーー

After waiting for about half an hour, a middle-aged man wearing winter gear came in.

He seemed to be the coachman.

The man looked around the hut and nodded.

「I see. So, you guys are all my passengers this time. Well then, the fare is two gold coins per person.」(coachman)

Two gold coins for two nights and three days of travel to the next town.

I don’t know if it’s expensive or not, but Celine said she would pay for us.

She took out eight gold coins from her pocket and handed them to the coachman.

After that, Tio took out two gold coins and paid the fare for herself.

「I will be in your care.」(Tio)

「Ou. Your father asked me to look after you, so let me know if you need anything.」(coachman)

Seems like they know each other.

…Hm? I think I’ve seen this coachman’s face somewhere before…

Ah, that’s right! He was one of the customers at the dining hall last night.

「Alright then. Let’s get into the carriage now, shall we?」(coachman)

We left the hut and followed the coachman to the stable next to it.

There was a carriage with two horses connected already parked nearby.

There were two benches on each side facing each other inside the carriage.

Under the benches, there were several wooden boxes. From its smell, I think they were filled with onions.

Seems like this coachman was also working as a delivery man.

I wonder which one is his main job….

After we took our seats in the carriage, the coachman sat down on the driver’s seat, and then a young man carrying a sword on his waist sat next to him.

The young man then introduced himself.

「Hello, everyone. I’m your bodyguard, Lumon.」(Lumon)

Although he was carrying a sword, he looked somewhat lanky as if he never trained his body. Honestly, he didn’t look strong at all.

When I looked at the young man with doubtful eyes, Celine whispered to me.

「Escorts from this village are just like decoration. You shouldn’t rely on them too much.」(Celine)

I see. So it’s like a warning sign saying, “There’s a security camera in this house!”, while actually, there’s no camera at all. The owner of the house is just too lazy or too broke to buy a security camera, so they just put such a sign in front of their house.

It’s better than nothing, I guess…

After confirming everyone was inside the carriage, the coachman turned his face to us and started explaining some important points.

「The fare you paid does not include meals. You can buy meals from me anytime you want. Well, I only have black bread and water, though. There are some blankets in that wooden box. You can use them to sleep. Don’t worry, they’re quite warm. Lumon and I will take turns to be on the watchout, so you can sleep peacefully. Lastly, there are monsters and bandits, but, well… monsters rarely appear on the road, and I haven’t encountered any bandits in the past few years, so I think we’ll be fine.」(coachman)

We have everything we need in my Item Box. We have warm meals and my container house, so I don’t think we will buy his black bread or use the blankets.

He said we didn’t have to worry about monsters and bandits. Well, that’s true, but not because they rarely appear, but because we would beat them to a pulp in case they appeared before us.

After he finished explaining, the coachman turned to the front, grabbed the reins, and started the carriage.

    1. We never did get what inn she would be working at other than her father’s brother runs it.
It would be possible, if awkward, for it to be Mark’s home.

As for flags, just Tio traveling with them could be considered a flag in this story…
