Item Synthesis 2-7 part 1

Chapter 2-7 : To The Eastern Capital (part 1)

「Dammit! Those bastards are fast! If only we were a bit quicker, it wouldn’t have happened!」(Izack)

After leaving the blacksmith village, Sheila, Nyat, and I headed to the eastern capital with the Wings of Steel members in pursuit of the Keemariq Bandit group.

We stopped by a few villages on the way to buy food and other necessary supplies, and we heard from the people living there that they had their treasures stolen.

It was most likely this bandit group’s doing since it happened almost at the same time.

「It can’t be helped. They’re sneaky thieves.」(Maitena)

「Do they commit theft wherever they go? That’s terrible…」(Kako)

「Hmm… This is strange…」(Martz)

Martz-san put his thumb on his chin and murmured.

「Martz-san, what do you mean?」(Kako)

「The people in those villages said that the items they lost were all expensive and precious ones.」(Martz)

「Hm? Isn’t that normal that those bandits stole expensive items?」(Kako)

「Yeah, but think about it. Those thieves knew they were being chased, so they had to hurry. I don’t think they would have time to appraise items one by one and would choose to steal anything they saw. However, they didn’t. They only stole precious and expensive items probably because they knew where those items were stored in the first place. According to the villagers, those thieves didn’t target the houses that don’t have any valuable items to steal, so my guess is probably right.」(Martz)

「I see.」(Kako)

Martz-san is amazing! I think he’s like the detective of the Wings of Steel.

「They once worked for Keema Shop, so it’s not weird if they knew which houses had valuables. The fact that they did it so smoothly means they might have been planning all this since a while ago. If that’s the case then… It’s better if we assume that they are planning to flee from this country.」(Martz)

Whoa… He can even predict that far?

Certainly, in a world without surveillance cameras like this, it would be difficult to track down criminals who escaped to another country, especially when the relations between countries in this world are not very good.

「Don’t worry. While you guys were shopping, I told a guard in the village we just stopped at to go to the eastern capital with a fast horse and tell the guards there to be aware of any suspicious group of people entering the city. Those bandits are sneaky, but I don’t think they can pass through that city’s high security easily.」(Maitena)

「I see. Good job as always, Maitena. Let’s hope we can catch them quickly before they steal more valuable items from people.」(Izack)

Everyone nodded at Izack-san and looked at him with determined eyes.

「So this is the eastern capital? The wall is so huge!」(Kako)

After traveling for a few days, we could finally see the eastern capital.

I was surprised at the size of the outer wall surrounding that city.

It was several times higher than Tranto Town’s wall. I think it was as big as skyscrapers in Tokyo.

「Fufu. Are you surprised, Kako? You know, this wall was made with the help of hundreds of magicians and alchemists.」(Maitena)

「Whoaa… That’s amazing!」(Kako)

I wonder if they created the materials for the wall with alchemy and reinforced them with magic.

After all, I don’t think it’s possible to build a huge wall surrounding a huge city like this with just the technology and engineering in this primitive world.

「Surely that wall looks amazing, but you know what’s even more amazing? That long queue to the gate…」(Sheila)

While I was looking up at the wall through the carriage window, Sheila looked down at the long queue of people in front of the gate.

「Ughh… Looks like it will take a while to get into the city. I wonder if we’ll be able to get inside before the sun goes down…」(Kako)

「Don’t worry, Kako, we can get in right away.」(Maitena)

「Eh? But how?」(Kako)

「You’ll see~」(Maitena)

Maitena-san looked confident for some reason.

Does it have something to do with her status as a daughter of a noble?

It seemed that the coachman knew that we didn’t have to queue, so he drove the carriage alongside the line of people until we reached the gate.

「Hey, stop! Can’t you see the line!? You have to get in the line if you want to enter the city!」(guard)

「Uhh… I’m sorry, but I was told we could enter right away.」(coachman)

「Huuuh!?」(guard)

As expected, the guards yelled at us when they saw us cutting in line, but then Maitena-san popped her head out of the carriage window and greeted the guard.

「Hello there! I’m sorry, but I have urgent business to attend to. Would you let us through?」(Maitena)

「Pardon me, Lady, butー Wait a minute… You areー!」(guard)

The guard suddenly straightened his posture and saluted Maitena-san when he saw her face.

「P-Please forgive me! I didn’t know it was you, Princess Maitena!」(guard)

Wait… what did he say? Princess Maitena?

「Princess Maitena?」
「Look! It’s really Princess Maitena!」
「Welcome back, Princess Maitena!」
「I’m glad you’re doing well, Princess Maitena!」(guards)

Soon after, the other guards around the gate started approaching our carriage. They were calling Maitena-san ‘princess’.

「Ma, Maitena-san, I didn’t know you were a princess!」(Kako)

「So, I’m now in the same carriage as a princess!? This is amazing! I’m gonna brag about this to the people in the village when I return!」(Sheila)

「Gaahahaha!」(Izack)

「Phu phu phu!」(Palfi)

Sheila and I were surprised. Nyat looked a bit surprised too, but Izack-san and Palfi-san were laughing for some reason. I don’t know what’s funny about it.

While I was wondering, Maitena-san let out a deep sigh.

「Hahh… Listen. I’m not a princess. The people in this city call me that without my consent.」(Maitena)

「Eh? Ahh… I see…」(Kako)

So, she’s not really a princess.

I think I can understand. The people in the blacksmith village call me goddess after all.

Maitena-san sighed one more time and turned her face to the guards outside.

「Everyone, I’ve told you many times to stop calling me princess!」(Maitena)

「But, Princess Maitena, you are the daughter of the Kushaq Family that rules this city. We should definitely call you princess! Right, guys?」
「That’s right!」
「All hail Princess Maitena!」(guards)

「Oh, please give me a break…」(Maitena)

She face-palmed and shook her head.

Maitena-san, I understand your feelings very well…

「I see, so you’re not a princess, but you’re a noble who rules this city, right? That’s still amazing! I’m still gonna brag about you when I return!」(Sheila)

「Please don’t!」(Maitena)

Well, she may not be a princess, but she seems to be a VIP in this city. I thought she was just a former female knight.

「Maitena-san, should we call you princess from now on?」(Kako)

「Oh! Kako-chan, nice idea! Phu phu!」(Palfi)

「All hail Princess Maitena!」(Izack)

「Stop it, you guys!」(Maitena)

Nyat and Martz-san couldn’t help but giggle silently while covering their mouths with their hands when Palfi-san and Izack-san teased Maitena-san.

I’m sorry, Maitena-san. They teased you because I asked a stupid question…

「Ahem! Anyway, would you guys let me and my friends get into the city? I have some information I need to tell my father as soon as possible.」(Maitena)

「Yes, of course! ーYou, open the gate!」
「Aye, sir!」(guards)

Just like that, we were able to easily set foot in the eastern capital without needing to line up in a long queue.

The power of a VIP is truly incredible…
