Chapter 1-17 : Practical Training (part 1)

I began the experiment as soon as I returned from the adventurer shop.
I used my Synthesis Skill on the Great River Lizard Armor and the Giant Turtle Bucklers I bought.
As a result, I got a top-quality piece of armor and a top-quality buckler with an additional effect on each of them.
The top-quality Great River Lizard Armor has resistance against fire magic, and the top-quality Giant Turtle Buclker can improve my running speed.
I wonder if those additional effects were caused by my Synthesis Skill.
「Say, Nyat, do top-quality armor usually have additional effects that normal-quality ones don’t have?」(Kako)
「Additional effects? What do you mean-nya?」(Nyat)
「As you can see, I synthesized five pieces of Great River Lizard Armor and five Giant Turtle Bucklers, and I got this top-quality armor and buckler. Each of them has a special effect. This armor has resistance against fire magic, and this buckler can boost my running speed.」(Kako)
「Really!? That’s awesome-nya! Top-quality equipment is rare because it’s extremely hard to make, so I don’t know much about it-nya, but I heard that you can make equipment with special abilities from materials you got from unique monsters-nya.」(Nyat)

「Exaclty-nya. But… I don’t think that adventurer shop sells such rare equipment. After all, it’s hard to find equipment made of rare materials from unique monsters unless you go to the big shops in the royal capital-nya.」(Nyat)
「I appraised this armor and buckler before I synthesized them, and they indeed didn’t have special effects. That means… Their special effects were caused by my Synthesis Skill, right?」(Kako)
「Perhaps because this armor and buckler are made of monster materials, not only did your Synthesis Skill improve their quality, but also increased their rarity as well-nya. That’s why they’re now treated as armor and a buckler made of unique monster materials although they were originally made of normal monster materials-nya.」(Nyat)
「I see. If it were equipment made of steel, my Synthesis Skill would only improve its quality, but since this armor and buckler were made of monster materials, it also improved their rarity as well.」(Kako)

「Hm, hmm. I see. Let’s say, if I combined a magical sword with a sword made of unique monster material, do you think I would get a super magic sword with two special effects?」(Kako)

This is kind of exciting! Too bad I don’t have a weapon made of monster materials now. I’ll save that for the next experiment. For now, I’m gonna try to improve the quality of the magical dagger I got from Maitena-san.
With that in mind, I grabbed Maitena-san’s dagger with one hand, and one of the mithril daggers I bought from the adventurer shop with the other hand, and then activated my Synthesis Skill.
「Synthesis! …Alright, let’s see what we got.」(Kako)

I bought two mithril daggers, so I still have one left. I could use it to improve this magical dagger’s quality even more, but I think I better keep it.
I’m thinking of asking an alchemist to enchant it with magic and turn it into a magical dagger so that I can have two magical daggers.
「Nyat, do you know where I can find an alchemist in this town? I want to ask them to turn this one into a magical dagger.」(Kako)
「But you already have the one you got from Maitena-nya. Do you even need two magical daggers?」(Nyat)
「Well, why not? I think it’s better to have more weapons just in case.」(Kako)
「You don’t even know how to use a dagger, do you? There’s no point in having many weapons if you don’t know how to use them-nya.」(Nyat)

「It’s good that you can make your weapons stronger with your Synthesis Skill, but you have to know how to use them-nya. You would end up getting seriously injured by your own weapon if you don’t know how to use it properly-nya.」(Nyat)
As he said, I have no idea how to use a weapon.
I don’t think I will be able to protect myself in a battle by swinging around my dagger randomly.
He’s right. I think it’s time for me to learn how to fight.
「Then can you teach me how to use a dagger?」(Kako)
「I’m sorry. I can’t-nya.」(Nyat)

「You don’t have to mimic my habit-nya… I did tell you to learn, but I can’t teach you because I’ve never used a weapon in fights-nya.」(Nyat)
Right after he said that, he raised his arm and showed me his sharp claws.
「After all, I have these claws I’m proud of-nya.」(Nyat)
「Ahh~ I see-nya~」(Kako)
「Hey, stop mimicking my habit-nya!」(Nyat)
Now that he mentions it, he doesn’t need a weapon to fight.
Claws are the best weapon a cat has after all.
「Forget about me. There’s someone more suited to teach you how to use a dagger-nya. Why don’t you ask her-nya?」(Nyat)
「Her? Ah, I see!」(Kako)
He must be talking about Maitena-san.
She gave me this dagger, so she must know how to use it, right?
I can ask her to teach me, but we just met a few hours ago. It would be awkward if I go see her now, so I think I will do it tomorrow.

The next day, I went to the inn where the Steel of Wings party members were based and asked Maitena-san right away.
「Eh? You want me to teach you how to use a dagger?」(Maitena)
「Yes! You gave me this dagger but I don’t know how to use it. I want to be able to protect myself. Maitena-san, I want you to train me!」(Kako)
「Umm…」(Maitena)
She folded her arms and glanced at Izack-san and the others as if asking for their advice.
「I don’t see why not. It would be great if Kako ojou-chan can protect herself from bad guys.」(Izack)
「You’re right! Well then, Kako, I will be your master!」(Maitena)
As expected from Izack-san. He didn’t seem to mind if Maitena-san became my master.
「Yay! Thank you, Master!」(Kako)
After I called her ‘master’, Maitena-san put her palm on her cheek and smiled while muttering to herself.
She looked so happy.
I have to try my best not to disappoint her!
