Chapter 4-11 : Griffons (part 1)

 

Titania and Leaf were glaring at each other while Mylia was alternately looking at them with an awkward face.

They both looked somewhat sleepy but Mylia could feel an intense atmosphere between them.

（Uhh… Can’t either of them say something…? This is so awkward…）

A moment after Mylia thought that, Leaf spoke first.

「You… You have defeated a dryad before, haven’t you…?」(Leaf)

Responding to Leaf’s words, Titania nodded at her.

「So you can tell, huh? I shouldn’t be surprised because you’re a dryad.」(Titania)

「I can feel it somehow.」(Leaf)

「Is that so? Well, you’re right. I fought a dryad when I went to the World Tree a hundred and fifty years ago.」(Titania)

「I see…」(Leaf)

「So… Do I have to fight you as well?」(Titania)

「No need.」(Leaf)

Saying that, Leaf looked away from Titania and stared at the surrounding trees.

「The World Tree is great, but I like this place too.」(Leaf)

Leaf seemed to like the calming atmosphere of the forest.

She sat down on a stump and stared at the trees with a blank expression and open mouth.

Titania, who was ready to fight, relaxed her body and took a deep breath.

「That’s great. I’ve just woken up, so I don’t want to fight a dryad.」(Titania)

「Whoaa… You got Leaf’s trust without even fighting her. Master, you’re amazing!」(Mylia)

As she said that, Mylia applauded Titania.

「Fufu~ Of course! I’m your beautiful, talented, genius master after all!」(Titania)

Saying that, Titania put her hands on her waist and smiled with a smug face.

（She sometimes can get full of herself, but I think it’s fine since what she says is true.）

「That’s my master!」(Mylia)

「「Yaay~!」」(Mylia & Titania)

Mylia and Titania smiled at each other and high-fived.

Titania then cleared her throat and turned her gaze to Chloe.

「Ahem. So, what brings you here today? Since Chloe is here too, I guess we’re going to talk about somewhat complicated things. Am I right?」(Titania)

「Umm… Yes, kinda.」(Chloe)

「Alright then~」(Titania)

Titania raised her index finger and swirled it as she began to control her magical power.

Right after, the door of her house opened by itself, and then a rounded table, chairs, cookies, and a tea set flew from her house and landed neatly near where Mylia was standing.

「By the way, you guys came at the right time because I’ve been feeling bored lately. Let’s enjoy some tea while we talk, shall we?」(Titania)

「Thank you, Master!」(Mylia)

「Thank you, Titania-sama.」(Chloe)

「Hey, sleepy dryad over there. You wanna join?」(Titania)

「Un.」(Leaf)

After Titania invited her, Leaf nodded, stood up from the stump, and joined the three at the table.

「So? Do you want me to help you with something?」(Titania)

「Titania-sama, if you have been watching over us, you may already know about my project. Actuallyーー……」(Chloe)

Chloe began to talk about her project. She explained her idea which was using griffons as a transportation method.

She also talked about her plan to raise and train griffons. If possible she wanted to have hundreds of griffons and make a big transportation industry in the kingdom.

While Chloe and Titania were talking with each other, Mylia and Leaf were enjoying tea while eating cookies.

「Mmm~ It’s sweet and tasty as always! Yummy~!」(Mylia)

「Yummy~…」(Leaf)

Mylia and Leaf’s mouths were stuffed with Titania’s homemade cookies.

The simple yet irresistible delightful taste and aroma of the cookies that were made of natural nuts made them unable to stop eating.

The black tea that was served seemed to be made from high-quality tea leaves that were carefully selected. It had a mellow and fruity aroma that matched the taste of the cookies.

「Ahh~~ What bliss~」(Mylia)

「Bliss~…」(Leaf)

Mylia took a sip of her tea and sighed.

She then glanced at Chloe and Titania as she grabbed another cookie.

After talking with Chloe for a while, Titania folded her arms and started thinking.

「Intriguing… Honestly, I think that’s a wonderful idea. You said that your mentor is a beast tamer, didn’t you?」(Titania)

「Ah, do you mean Count Grimoire? Yes, she is.」(Chloe)

「Can you tell me more about her?」(Titania)

「Umm… She is an eccentric old woman, but her skills as a beast tamer can’t be overstated. She is the first person who was able to tame and train great ravens. Thanks to her, the news companies in this kingdom can distribute their newspapers quickly using great ravens as their main transportation method. She seemed to be interested in my idea and wanted to support my project. She said that training griffons is possible.」(Chloe)

「I see… I don’t think training griffons will be easy, especially the adult ones. However, I think training them from hatchlings will be a lot easier.」(Titania)

While saying that, Titania grabbed some berries on her wooden plate and brought them into her mouth.

「Come to think of it, Count Grimoire once told me that she picked up a baby griffon in a forest a long time ago and raised it. Her daughter is currently taking care of it in her territory. That’s probably why she said that training griffons is possible.」(Chloe)

「Hee~ So her daughter is also a beast tamer.」(Titania)

「It seems so… By the way, griffons are magical beasts, right? Can you tell me more about them?」(Chloe)

「I want to hear it too!」(Mylia)

Now that all the cookies on the plate had been eaten, Mylia thought to join the conversation.

Titania noticed that the plate was empty. She then smiled and took out some more cookies from her magic bag, refilling the plate.

Right after, Mylia and Leaf continued eating the cookies while listening to the conversation.

Titania stuck out her index finger and concentrated her magical power on its tip.

While drawing a griffon, a creature with the upper body of an eagle and the lower body of a lion in the air with magic, Titania started explaining what she knew about those creatures.

「Griffons are magical beasts that live in groups governed by a leader. They are beasts that look out for each other. If you attack one of them, its entire herd will retaliate. Because of that, staying away from them has become common sense among us elves since a long time ago.」(Titania)

「I see…」(Chloe)

「Master, are they strong?」(Mylia)

When Mylia asked that, Titania smirked at her.

「Yeah, they’re strong. They’re one of the strongest magical beasts after all. Moreover, they are very smart.」(Titania)

Listening to Titania, Mylia swallowed her saliva. She was somewhat excited after learning that there are still strong monsters like griffons in this world.
