Chapter 1-27 : The Girl And The Gentleman Have Arrived At The Royal Capital (part 1)

「Come with you…?」(Elle)

「Yes. I will provide you with shelter, food, and clothing. If necessary, I’ll even provide you with a servant to help you with your needs.」(nobleman)

「Umm… Why would you go that far for me? We’ve just met.」(Elle)

「Well, it’s simply because I’m worried about you. Besides… You might think it’s strange, but for some reason, I have a strong desire to protect you.」(nobleman)

Earlier, the nobleman said that Elle resembled his daughter, the late queen.

The biggest reason why he wanted to protect her was because he saw his daughter in Elle.

「The city is not safe right now. It’s dangerous for a young lady to be alone.」(nobleman)

「I’m not alone. Yoyo is with me.」(Elle)

「Yoyo? Ah, do you mean your fluffy little friend here? He may be able to keep you company, but a cat won’t be able to protect you from bad people out there.」(nobleman)

「…..」(Elle)

The man didn’t know that Yoyo was a fairy and a reliable companion to Elle, but he was partly right. People thought that Yoyo was a normal cat, so he wouldn’t be able to do much for Elle in the city.

When Elle was boarding the ship, she thought that she might need an adult human as her guardian. Yoyo might be able to protect her from danger, but if she had an adult by her side, it would make it easier for her to look for her dad in an unfamiliar city.

But then Elle recalled Moritz’s words.

“Don’t trust people you meet for the first time, especially adultsー not until you meet them several times and confirm that they are worthy of your trust.”

The nobleman’s offer was tempting, but Elle thought it might not be a good idea to go with him now.

「Thank you for your kind offer, but I’ll be fine. I won’t rely on you, Sir.」(Elle)

「Are you sure? But why?」(nobleman)

「Because… I don’t fully trust you…」(Elle)

When she said that, Elle thought the man would be sad, but he was smiling instead.

「Haha! I had a feeling you would say that. You’re really a smart girl. That’s right. You shouldn’t trust adults so easily.」(nobleman)

「Also, I was told that I can’t trust adults who talk too much.」(Elle)

「Hahaha! I see, I see. I’m sorry for talking too much. You’re right. “Silence is gold, while eloquence is mere silver.”」(nobleman)

「Those words… They’re from The Story of the Outworlder Hero volume 5 page 205.」(Elle)

「Little Missy, you know that book? I forgot which page, but I remember it was in volume 5. Being able to read at a young age is already surprising enough, and you even remember the page number? That’s amazing!」(nobleman)

「I have a good memory.」(Elle)

「I see. You’re full of surprise, Little Missy. Let me ask you one more time. Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?」(nobleman)

「No, I’m sorry.」(Elle)

「I see. You can read maps, read books, and have an excellent memory. It’s a pity that I can’t take a talented child like you home.」(nobleman)

「A talented child…? Me…?」(Elle)

「Yes. You are a genius.」(nobleman)

「Really?」(Elle)

「Of course. I’ve never met a child as smart and as talented as you. Many people want your talents.」(nobleman)

Elle grew up with Moritz who could do almost everything. He could read, he could do math, he could use magic, alchemy, and many other things.

Because of that, she thought that being able to read was normal, but it turned out that children don’t normally read.

She realized that she screwed up by revealing what she was capable of to the man. It would be bad if other strangers knew about her talents.

「Umm… Sir…?」(Elle)

Seeing Elle’s face, the man realized what she was trying to say and smiled.

「Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone about you.」(nobleman)

「Promise me. If you did, I would tell people that you cried in front of me.」(Elle)

When Elle said that jokingly, the nobleman burst out laughing.

「Hahaha! No, please don’t. That would be embarrassing! Well, since you don’t trust me yet, please take this.」(nobleman)

The man took out something from his pocket and presented it to Elle.

It was a silver ring with the engraving of a unicorn on the head of the ring. It seemed to be his family crest.

「A ring…? But I don’t need it.」(Elle)

「If you don’t accept it, I will tell everyone about your talents.」(nobleman)

「Ugh… That’s cunning of you…」(Elle)

「Well, adults are cunning.」(nobleman)

「…I’ll keep that in mind.」(Elle)

Elle reluctantly accepted the ring and put it in her bag.

「I’ve talked so much to you but I haven’t introduced myself. My name is Gilbert de Forster.」(Gilbert)

「I’m… umm…」(Elle)

The man gave his real name, but Elle remained silent.

Seeing Elle’s reaction, the man nodded at her.

「That’s right. You shouldn’t give your name so easily to people you don’t trust. You made the right decision. However, if we ever cross paths again and I manage to gain your trust, would you tell me your name?」(Gilbert)

Elle replied to the nobleman named Gilbert with a smile and nodded.

「Thank you.」(Gilbert)

As they were having a conversation, the stagecoach kept heading toward the city and approaching the main gate.

Elle could see a long line of people queuing by the gate through the window.

「There are a lot of people. Is that some kind of inspection?」(Elle)

「Yes. Most of those people are immigrants from neighboring countries. The previous king had been banning foreigners from entering this country, but the current king has removed that restriction. Now people from other countries can come to this city, and because of that, there’s a long queue like this almost every day.」(Gilbert)

「I see.」(Elle)

There were many people of different races lining up, waiting for their turn to be checked.

There were several men in armor who seemed to be city guards scattered around the huge gate.

Some of them were checking the people, making sure that they were not carrying dangerous diseases, especially black spot disease before they could enter the city. They were also checking the people’s belongings in their carriages to see if they brought suspicious and dangerous items while the other guards were watching nearby while holding their weapons just in case.

「Driver, keep moving.」(Gilbert)

「Yes, Sir.」(coachman)

Elle thought her stagecoach would be joining the queue, but Gilbert told the coachman to keep moving, passing by those people and stopping by the gate.

While Elle was wondering why they didn’t queue, a guard opened the door and peeked inside.

He looked surprised when he saw Gilbert and immediately lowered his head.

「Welcome back, Sir.」(city guard)

He then turned his gaze to Elle, but before he could ask her a question, Gilbert spoke to him.

「She’s with me.」(Gilbert)

「…Understood.」(city guard)

The guard then bowed once again and closed the door.

After that, the stagecoach continued moving forward and entering the city.

「Little Missy, welcome to Porcelain Blue.」(Gilbert)
