Chapter 1-21 : Protect The Walls! (part 1)

 

After selling my herbs to the Merchant Guild, I walked my way back to the inn.

While walking down the main street, I saw a lot of people panicking and guards who were busy giving instructions to the townspeople.

「Hurry up! The monsters are getting close to this town!」
「The knights said they needed more people at the northwest gate! Those who can fight please take your weapons and follow me there!」
「Don’t forget to carry as many building materials as you can in case the wall is destroyed!」(guards)

As the guards were shouting and giving orders, the people were running around with weapons and building materials such as wood planks in their hands.

「Good. Be careful.」(guard)

「You too, Sir. Please be careful.」(Kako)

I bowed at the guard and continued heading for the inn.

He treated me like a child, but he was a good person.

Well, everyone who treats me like a child is a good person though. Still, they kind of annoy me.

Not long after I parted ways with the guard, suddenlyー

BRRRRRRRRRRRー！！

I heard a loud sound and felt a vibration on the ground at the same time.

「W, What is happening!?」(Kako)

For a moment, I thought it was an earthquake, but a few seconds later, it happened again.

The rumbling sound and the vibration occurred continuously two, three, four times in a row.

It was clearly not an earthquake.

「What is going on!?」(Kako)

I don’t know what exactly is happening, but one thing I can think of is that the monsters are rampaging right next to the town.

「Nyat… I hope he is alright…」(Kako)

Not only am I worried about Nyat but I’m also worried about Maitena-san and the others. Since they are the number one adventurer party in this town, they must also be fighting those monsters right now.

「At this rate, they will break the walls and let the other monsters get into this town!」

「But we don’t have enough men to protect them all!」
「I think we should build a barricade near the wall so when the monsters break in, we can prevent them from going further.」
「You’re right. We will hold them as best as we can while the main force outside reduces their numbers.」(guards)

No way… The situation seems to be more severe than I thought…

Wallbreakers are probably monsters, and they are called that perhaps because they are capable of destroying this town’s huge walls.

If they broke the wall, the people in this town would be in danger!

「Khh…! It’s not the time to go back to my room and lie down in my bed doing nothing!」(Kako)

Returning to the inn is a bad idea, but… I don’t know what else I can do…

Maitena-san taught me how to fight but I can only kill weak monsters such as Ball Slimes with my current ability.

I’m wearing powerful armor right now but I don’t know how long it will last against a horde of high-ranked monsters.

The best-case scenario is that Nyat and the other fighters can defeat all the monsters before the Wallbreakers break the walls, but I think the probability for this outcome to happen is extremely slim.

The guards decided to build a simple barricade to hold the swarm of monsters. Should I help them fight the monsters?

But… I don’t have any offensive skills and neither can I use magic like RPG main characters.

All I have is my Synthesis Skill which is clearly not suitable for fighting.

I wonder if I can do something with it…

With this Skill, I can combine materials into completely different materials. I can also increase the quality of materials by combining the same materials.

Recently, I learned that I could add special effects to equipment by combining them with unique magic stones.

While thinking about magic stones, I took out one of the ones I got from defeating Ball Slimes in the forest today.
