Item Synthesis 3-2 part 1

Chapter 3-2 : Preparing For The Trip (part 1)

After meeting with Lord Raykard and selling him my Blizzard Magic Sword, I went back to my room and discussed my future plans with Nyat.

「Nyat, I know where to go next. We’re going to the southern region!」(Kako)

「Oh? That’s a good idea-nya! We can find a lot of fish in that place-nya!」(Nyat)

He really likes fish. That’s a catー I mean, a catto for you.

I imagined him walking around the town with a fish in his mouth. That would be cute.

「I need to prepare a lot of things before we go. First of all, I’m going as a merchant, so I need goods to sell. I have to at least make enough money to cover the trip cost.」(Kako)

「What are you going to sell-nya?」(Nyat)

「Hmm… I read in books that most traveling merchants always bring salt with them to sell, but our destination is where the salt is produced, so I don’t think it will sell well there. It’s next to the sea after all.」(Kako)

「Why don’t you sell magic weapons-nya?」(Nyat)

「Nobles and rich people may buy them, but I kinda want to sell affordable goods for commoners this time.」(Kako)

I should have asked Raykard-sama what items sell well in the south, but he already left.

No, wait. He’s a noble. He might not be familiar with popular goods among commoners. Perhaps asking him wouldn’t do any good anyway.

「In that case, you need to sell a huge amount of items to make money-nya. Are you sure your magic bag can hold all your goods-nya?」(Nyat)

「Aa…」(Kako)

Now that he mentions it, I only have one magic bag. If I have to carry so many items, I will need more than one.

「You’re right. I can think about goods to sell later. I think I will buy some magic bags first. Nyat, let’s go shopping now, but secretly~」(Kako)

「Roger-nya~」(Nyat)

I wanted to look for some magic bags, but I didn’t want to go out as a noble lady, so I changed into my old dress and sneaked out through the back door with Nyat.

◆◆◆

The only magic item shop I knew was the one recommended by Father. I once visited there when I was looking for a magic sword to lure Oglan, and that shop was a fancy shop for rich people.

However, today, I wanted to visit the ones for commoners, but I didn’t know where to start, so I went to the merchant guild and asked the receptionist.

「Excuse me, do you know where I can buy cheap magic bags?」(Kako)

「There are several magic item shops that sell magic bags in this city, but most of them are expensive. If you want the cheaper ones, there are three in this area. There’s one next to the bakery on this block, another one about two hundred meters from here, and lastly…」(receptionist)

She was telling me the location of the shops with a smile on her face, but suddenly her smile disappeared as she bent forward and brought her face closer to mine.

「There’s a magic item shop called Monmaq Shop on the next block. They sell the cheapest magic items around here, but I don’t recommend that shop.」(receptionist)

「Why?」(Kako)

「I heard from people that they sometimes sell broken and defective items. The magic items they sell don’t last long.」(receptionist)

「Is that why they sell them cheap?」(Kako)

「Most likely. Only those who don’t know about that shop’s reputation and those who know little about magic items visit that shop.」(receptionist)

「I see. Thank you for the information.」(Kako)

Now that I know where to go, I thanked the kind receptionist with a bow and left the building.

「Let’s go, Nyat!」(Kako)

「Kako, we’re going to that shady shop she mentioned, aren’t we-nya?」(Nyat)

「Oh? I didn’t know you were an esper.」(Kako)

「I’m not, but I know what you’re thinking from your face-nya. Just don’t do anything stupid, okay-nya?」(Nyat)

「Huh? That’s rude! This is the face of someone who has just come up with a good idea!」(Kako)

「Whatever you say-nya.」(Nyat)

We walked for a few hundred meters to the next block, and then I spotted a shop with the signboard saying 【Monmaq Shop】.

I entered the shop and saw a middle-aged man dusting a shelf while facing away from me. He must be the shopkeeper.

「Excuse me.」(Kako)

「Welcoー Huh? A little child? What are you doing here? It’s not a playground.」(shopkeeper)

He greeted me with annoying words as soon as he turned his head and saw me by the door.

It’s been a while since someone mocked me like this.

「Sir, I’m not a child! I’m a customer!」(Kako)

「Oh, really? Sorry then. What do you want?」(shopkeeper)

He replied to me while continuing dusting the shelf.

I don’t think that’s the right attitude when you’re dealing with a customer… oh, well…

「Do you have magic bags?」(Kako)

「Yeah, of course.」(shopkeeper)

「Umm, I heard that you sell broken and defective items. Is that true?」(Kako)

「Tsk. I don’t know where you heard it, but, well, I don’t deny it. However, I only sell those kinds of items a few times. I sell the normal and completely functional ones most of the time. Magic bags, was it? Don’t you worry, I’ll sell you the working ones.」(shopkeeper)

He put away his duster and turned toward the back door.

「Wait!」(Kako)

「Hm?」(shopkeeper)

But I stopped him before he could reach his hand toward the doorknob. He then turned around.

「I don’t want to buy the normal ones. I want to buy defective, broken magic bags. The kind that you would throw away.」(Kako)

「H, huh?」(shopkeeper)

He widened his eyes in surprise.

「Are you sure you want those things? They are garbage.」(shopkeeper)

「Yup. I’m sure.」(Kako)

「I don’t recommend them. It’s not worth your money. Are you really, really sure?」(shopkeeper)

「Yyyup~」(Kako)

「You can only use them once or twice before they break, you know?」(shopkeeper)

「Perfect. Just what I need.」(Kako)

「…..」(shopkeeper)

He put his hand on his forehead and sighed.

「Hahh… You’re such a weird kid… Wait here.」(shopkeeper)

He proceeded to the back room and returned with a pile of tattered magic bags in his hands. He then put them on the table.

They looked just like old rags, but they were valuable items, at least for me.

「I want this one, this one, this oneー」(Kako)

I looked at them closely and chose ten magic bags randomly.

「Since they are defective, they’re surely much cheaper than normal, right?」(Kako)

「Yeah, I guess so…」(shopkeeper)

「How much?」(Kako)

「One gold coin.」(shopkeeper)

「Alright.」(Kako)

One gold coin for ten old, broken magic bags. That’s not bad.

The fair price for one functional magic bag is around 20 gold coinsー 200 gold coins for ten bags.

「Let me ask you one more time… Are you sure? Even I, the seller, don’t think a gold coin is worth this trash.」(shopkeeper)

「Thank you for your concern, but I’m one hundred percent sure. Here’s your gold coin.」(Kako)

I put one gold coin on his table and took the magic bags I had just bought.

「Hahh… Alright then. Just don’t come and complain to me if you can’t use them.」(shopkeeper)

「I won’t. Thank you, Sir.」(Kako)

「Yeah, yeah…」(shopkeeper)

As I thanked him and turned around, he waved his hand with his fingers down at me as if he was shooing a cat away.

He must think that I’m a weirdo, but it doesn’t matter. After all, I have secured ten magic bags for only one gold coin! I can just fix them with my Synthesis Skill later~
