Chapter 1-20 : Monsters Are Coming! (part 1)

 

「Phew! We got a big haul today! I think it’s time to go home.」(Kako)

「Okay-nya.」(Nyat)

After filling my bags with Ball Slime magic stones and herbs I collected in the forest today, Nyat and I decided to return home.

The other day, I learned that I could make unique magic stones with my Synthesis Skill, so I asked Nyat to take me to the forest.

Nyat was protecting me from other monsters while I was hunting Ball Slimes.

When we were not fighting, he often looked around even when I was talking to him as if he was looking for something.

We didn’t go deep into the forest, so the monsters we fought were not that strong. He was being too cautious for some reason. I wonder why.

By the way, aside from fighting Ball Slimes, I also made a lot of herbs by synthesizing random weeds in the forest. Thanks to that, my Synthesis Skill improved and I’m now able to mass-produce things even faster.

「Uwahh… The sun is starting to set. We stayed a little too long in the forest. We have to go back before dark.」(Kako)

As soon as we came out of the forest, we were greeted by the orange scenery of the meadow as the sun started to set.

I was so busy hunting slimes and synthesizing weeds that I lost track of time.

「Get on my back. I’ll carry you to the town-nya.」(Nyat)

「Yaay~!」(Kako)

Saying that, Nyat dropped down on all fours.

Accepting his kind offer, I hopped onto his back and wrapped my arms around his neck. He then started running toward the town.

「By the way, how was the lunch?」(Kako)

「It was fantastic-nya. Eating delicious food while hunting monsters was a great experience-nya.」(Nyat)

「Hehe~ I’m glad you like it!」(Kako)

We had a little conversation about lunch while heading to the town.

Because we left the town at noon, we had to eat lunch in the forest while taking a break from hunting.

I used the seasonings I made by synthesizing herbs to cook roasted meat for Nyat. As always, he seemed to really like it.

Nyat was running really fast. It didn’t take long until the town walls came into view.

As we got closer to the town’s gate, we saw a gatekeeper waving his hands.

「Nya nya!?」(Nyat)

He seemed to try to tell us something. I couldn’t hear him very well, but Nyat, who had good ears, seemed to understand what he said and ran faster.

「Monsters are coming-nya!」(Nyat)

「Monsters!?」(Kako)

After we got close enough to the gate, I could finally hear the gatekeeper.

「Quickly get to the town! No need to pay the fee!」(gatekeeper)

「Okay-nya!」(Nyat)

Nyat kept running and passed through the gate.

As soon as we entered the town, the gatekeepers closed the gate and secured it with a huge, thick wooden drawbar.

It seemed that they were planning to close the gate before dark. We are lucky that they noticed us before doing it.

「Sir, what is happening?」(Kako)

I got off Nyat’s back and asked a familiar gatekeeper. He was the one who welcomed us when we came to this town a while ago.

「Little Miss, you’re lucky to return before dark. You know that the population of the monsters in the surrounding forests has been growing lately, right?」(gatekeeper)

「I see. They are indeed popped like water balloons when they are defeated.」(Kako)

「As a matter of course, other than wild animals and weaker monsters, carnivorous monsters eat humans too-nya, so it’s only natural for them to head to places where the scent of humans is strong, and they are heading here because this is the closest town to their habitat-nya.」(Nyat)

「Don’t worry, Little Miss, we’ll do our best to defend this town. The knights will be dispatched to stop the monsters in the plains near the town. Oh, right. I heard that cattos are warriors. 「Okay-nya. You should go back to the inn now. Don’t take off your armor just in case so that you can escape any time-nya.」(Nyat)

「Alright, I understand. You be careful, okay? Don’t die or I will pull your whiskers real hard!」(Kako)

「Nya nya!? That would be painful! Alright, I’ll try my best to stay alive-nya!」(Nyat)

「That’s right! You better survive! Good luck!」(Kako)

I waved my hand to Nyat and ran down the main street toward the inn.
