Chapter 349 : The Way Home

A few hours had passed since we left the capital.

The sky looked a bit cloudy and the temperature was as cold as ever, but our carriage was still moving down the road toward Fatia Town where my parents were.

Currently, I’m sitting next to Celine in the driver’s seat. She is teaching me how to drive a carriage.

Ester was supposed to drive, but she decided to remain in the castle. I planned to have Ester teach me how to drive on our way home, but in the end, that chance didn’t come.

Speaking of Ester, we had been together for months, and I hadn’t had a single day without seeing her face.

I’d be lying if I said I don’t feel lonely, but it’s not that we won’t see each other again. She promised to visit us someday.

「So, I just need to hold the reins like this?」(Mark)

「Yup. No need to worry too much. Horses like this one have been trained to pull carriages. All you have to do is to hold the reins firmly and trust the horse. You don’t have to learn difficult techniques yet.」(Celine)

「Alright.」(Mark)

「If you’re driving in the middle of a town, you might need to learn how to control the horse. However, we’re moving straight right now. The horse knows what to do. It will go straight ahead following the road. If there’s an obstacle, it will avoid it on its own because it doesn’t want to hit it, obviously. If you want it to stop, you have to pull the reins. It’s a bit difficult with a child’s strength, but I’m sure you can manage it.」(Celine)

「Got it.」(Mark)

Seems like driving a carriage is easier than driving a car. Also, you don’t need a license to drive a carriage.

Even so, I don’t think average children have enough strength to pull the reins unless they train their bodies like Delica and Ester.

In my case, my physical ability has improved since I absorbed a huge amount of Ether from the special monsters I defeated, so I’m strong enough to do it.

「Taking care of the horse is also important as a coachman. If you take good care of them, they will trust you and listen to you more. That way you can control them better.」(Celine)

「I see.」(Mark)

Now that she mentioned it, I remember Garrett oji-san immediately fed his horses and gave them water every time we stopped to rest on our way to the capital back then.

I understand why building trust with the horses is important.

「By the way, do you know how far it is to our town?」(Mark)

「With this pace, I think we will get there in four days.」(Celine)

「Four days? That’s quite far away. Isn’t Fatia a posttown to the capital?」(Mark)

「It is, but the reason why it’s quite far from the capital is because the area between Fatia and the capital is not safe. Most of it is inhabited by dangerous monsters. To build a town, you need a safe and productive land after all.」(Celine)

「I see. Make sense.」(Mark)

Now that she mentioned it, there are no strong monsters near Fatia. There are only goblins and kobolds in the forest near the town.

As for Secard Village and Sadola Town, even though there are monsters inhabiting nearby, people built settlements there because the land is productive.

Secard Village has a huge lake, and the people there make a living from fishing, meanwhile, Sadola Town has a mining site.

ーーーーー

Celine said that this area was quite dangerous, but I’ve been driving for three hours and we haven’t encountered any monsters yet.

There was not much to do. I spent my time talking with Celine while driving.

「Mark, aren’t you tired? Let’s switch.」(Celine)

「No. I’m fine.」(Mark)

「Are you sure? You can go inside and sleep if you’re tired.」(Celine)

「I want to drive a bit longer. Besides, I want to keep you company.」(Mark)

「Fufu. If you say so~」(Celine)

Honestly, Celine’s right. I’m a bit tired, but I want to do it a bit longer.

I used to drive a lot in my previous life, and it reminds me of myself back then.

『Onii-chan, something’s coming this way.』(Nicola)

I thought Nicola was sleeping inside the carriage. The presence she felt probably woke her up.

『Can you tell what’s coming?』(Mark)

『I’m not sure, but I feel a similar presence as the baby folnir you saved the other day.』(Nicola)

『Do you think it’s a folnir?』(Mark)

『Most likely. It’s coming from the mountain.』(Nicola)

As Nicola said that, I shifted my gaze toward the mountain and saw something white flying this way.

「Hm? What’s wrong, Mark?」(Celine)

「Something’s coming. I think it’s a folnir.」(Mark)

「A folnir? Didn’t Lord Walltrail say that they rarely left their mountain? What are they doing here?」(Celine)

「I don’t know, but I don’t think they want to harm us.」(Mark)

The white thing in the sky kept flying toward us and spread its beautiful silver wings as it hovered over our carriage.

Seeing the mythical beast, the horse stopped and started panicking.

「Mark, don’t just space out! Pull the reins!」(Celine)

「A, ah! I’m sorry!」(Mark)

I was bewildered by the folnir. I forgot that I was holding the reins.

Celine quickly helped me pull them to calm the horse down. Meanwhile, the folnir stopped flying and perched in a nearby tree.

The baby folnir I saved was big. It was bigger than a regular adult eagle.

However, the one perching on the tree in front of me was even bigger. It must be an adult folnir. It was twice the size of the baby folnir.

「Apologeis. I didn’t mean to scare the horse. I’ve been looking for you.」(folnir)

「No, it’s alright……….. Hm? Wait a minute…」(Mark)

While looking down at me from the tree, the folnir talked to me.

「You… You can speak!?」(Mark)

  1. It’s “apologies”, right? If you hear “apologize”, you’d think someone demands from you to apologize to them for some reason.
