Chapter 334 : The Mission Begins
Since we were not allowed to go outside until Tryon and the guards finished building the plan, I decided to stay in my room today, chilling and practicing magic, of course, while keeping on wearing this stupid dress…
I used the Resonance Stone to call my parents in Fatia at the usual time before lunch. They were doing great as always. I bet they didn’t expect their son to be wearing a dress while talking with them.
Nicola was here too to talk with our parents. She can be annoying sometimes, but luckily, she didn’t tell my parents that I was cross-dressing.
Well, she never stopped teasing me by calling me Mary onee-chan, though.
By the way, Tryon and Maya didn’t join us in the dining room to have lunch. They must have been having a very long meeting with the guards.
While eating lunch, I noticed Liane kept glancing at me with a somewhat red face. She always looked away when I glanced back at her.
She has been acting weird this entire day. I wonder why…
At dinner, Tryon, Maya, and Morrison joined us in the dining room. They looked tired. Aside from the meeting, they had to prepare everything needed for the mission after all.
After we finished our meal, they briefly explained the plan.
It seemed that we were going to infiltrate the enemy’s base tomorrow night.
ーーーーー
After spending our time in the castle for another day, it was finally time to begin the operation.
Right now, Ester, Liane, Maya, and I are heading to the suburban area a bit far away from the castle.
We couldn’t draw too much attention, so we passed through the back gate of the castle and headed there on foot.
There were not many people around here, and there were barely any magic lights in this area. We could only rely on the faint moonlight while walking down the bumpy unpaved road.
While following Maya who was leading the way, I recalled the outline of the operation.
This operation has two objectives: rescuing the captives who were kept in the basement and capturing the criminals to take over the control of the Darkan Company from them.
Our team’s mission is the former one, which is rescuing the captives. After we free them and ensure their safety, we will use a Resonance Stone to inform the other team to carry out their mission and fulfill the second objective.
As for how we will rescue the victims, we have prepared a couple of plans depending on the situation, and the one who will make the decision is Maya, who will be infiltrating the basement with us.
Yes… She ended up joining us…
I thought she would join the other team, but Tryon told her to join us instead. Although he gave Liane the permission to join this risky mission, he seemed to be still worried about his precious daughter. That’s why he asked Maya to protect her.
Maya was a well-known person in this city when she was an adventurer, so Darkan’s subordinates might recognize her.
At least that was what we thought at first, but then we realized that none of the thugs who attacked us in the market a few days ago seemed to recognize her.
We then came to a conclusion that they might not recognize Maya since she changed a lot after becoming a maid for the Walltrail House.
Even Celine, who was her close friend, couldn’t recognize Maya right away.
To make it even harder for Darkan’s subordinates to recognize her, Maya had her hair tied up in a bun hairstyle. She also wore silver-rimmed glasses and a simple feminine-looking dress which was a stark contrast to her barbaric appearance when she was an adventurer.
After walking for a while, we could see a carriage heading toward us. There was a mean-looking thug in dirty clothes sitting in the driver’s seat.
The thug stopped his carriage right in front of us and called out to us.
「Are you guys ready?」(Morrison)
We replied to the thug with a nod.
He’s not actually a thug. He’s Morrison, the captain of the guards. He disguised himself as the bandit who would hand us over to Darkan.
「Maya-san, how do I look?」(Morrison)
「Not bad. You do know how to disguise yourself.」(Maya)
「Well, I’ve been on this kind of mission a few times. Go get inside now.」(Morrison)
Right after Morrison said that, two other guards disguised as bandits got off the carriage to let us get inside.
Morrison would look suspicious if he worked alone, so we needed at least two more people to act as bandits.
「Liane-sama, you can go first.」(Mary)
I don’t know if the phrase “ladies first” is a thing in this world, but I let Liane enter first because I think the seat at the front part of the carriage is the safest one.
Maya, Ester, and I will sit next to the guards so that we can protect her in case we are attacked.
Then, Liane, who hadn’t said a single word since we left the castle, suddenly pointed her finger at me.
「You should stop calling me that!」(Liane)
「Eh? You mean… stop calling you ‘Liane-sama’?」(Mary)
「My face aside, my name is quite well-known in the capital. Besides, we have to act like commoners, and commoners don’t call each other with ‘sama’, right?」(Liane)
She’s right. We need to be extra careful.
I almost forgot I had to see her as a commoner in this mission.
「I see. So, what should I call you then?」(Mary)
「I, I’ll give you special permission to call me Lia!」(Liane)
「Alright. Umm… Lia-san…」(Mary)
「ー!!」(Liane)
When I called her that, she looked away and shivered a little.
Ugh… She must feel disgusted being called like that by me…
But, what can I do? She’s the one asking.
「So…」(Mary)
「ーA, Ahem! …Not bad. Not bad at all, but you can call me without an honorific. Also, you can stop talking politely with me.」(Liane)
She was trembling as she talked, and her face gradually turned red.
I can understand that she doesn’t want to be called so casually by someone like me, but she told me to do so.
I can feel her strong determination. She seems to be prepared to do anything to increase the success rate of this operation.
In that case, I have to cooperate as best as I can.
「Got it, Lia.」(Mary)
I nodded and smiled at her.
「~~~!!」(Liane)
Again, she trembled, and her face turned even redder.
I’m sure she feels disgusted with me as if her blood boils every time I call her that but she endures it as best as she can. That’s why she behaves weirdly like that.
She’s willing to endure so much pain for the success of this mission. What a strong girl. As expected from the daughter of a noble.
「Umm… What do you think?」(Mary)
「Yes! Yes, yes! That’s perfect, Mary onee-sama~!」(Liane)
「O, “Onee-sama”…? I thought we didn’t call each other with honorifics.」(Mary)
「Well, my role is supposed to be a well-educated commoner girl who grew up in a wealthy merchant family, so there’s no problem if I call others like that. Alright, enough chit-chat. Let’s get going.」(Liane)
Ester, Maya, and I entered the carriage after Liane.
Lastly, the two guards entered and closed the door as if they were guarding the entrance so that we couldn’t escape.
Ester looked excited. Maya looked as calm as always. But… Liane looked kinda weird.
I wonder if she’s okay ーI mean, mentally…
I’m starting to get a little worried about her…
