Chapter 3-17 : Granny (part 1)
「I see… So you are the human girl the chief talked about.」(Granny)
「Y-yes… My name is Kako…」(Kako)
I was looking her in the eye and introduced myself nervously.
Being stared at by her, I really wanted to look away, but I was afraid I would hurt her feelings.
「Kako. I see.」(Granny)
I thought most mermaids hated humans, judging by how the people here reacted the first time they saw me, and I thought Granny was not an exception.
I thought she would throw hateful words at me, but the moment such thought crossed my mind, she smiled at me.
「I heard everything from the chief. Thank you for saving the sick villagers, Kako.」(Granny)
「A, ahh… Don’t worry about that. It’s not a big deal.」(Kako)
「Not a big deal, you say? Hya hya hya! You’re such a modest child. You just saved this village, you know? You made the medicine that the best herbalist on this island can’t even make, and that’s very impressive! Hya hya hya!」(Granny)
「Th, thank you.」(Kako)
That was unexpected. Not just smiling gently, she also acted humbly even toward a young person like me. I wasn’t sure how to react because of that.
But I’m glad that Granny is not a scary, grumpy old lady like I thought.
「The chief asked me to give you potion. You need it to make your medicine, right? Here it is.」(Granny)
Granny handed me a big conch shell that seemed to contain the potion.
It looks like they use conch shells instead of bottles as containers, making it feel more mermaid-like.
Well, the person who made it didn’t look like a mermaid, though. Just like Roan said, she looked like a dried fish.
Woops… No, I can’t have such thoughts. It’s rude toward her.
「Thank you, Granny.」(Kako)
I took the conch shell from her hands. It was heavier than I thought. Looks like I will have enough potion to make the antidote for the remaining sick people.
「Kako, the potion we use is a bit different from the one humans use. Will it work?」(Granny)
「Umm…」(Kako)
Now that she mentions it, mermaids and humans are different. Of course the potions they use will be different.
「Don’t worry. I’ll figure it out.」(Kako)
「I see. You’re still young, but you’re very talented. By the way, can I watch you working on the medicine? I’m curious.」(Granny)
「Eh!?」(Kako)
Oh, no. I can’t show her my Synthesis ability.
It’s not that I don’t trust the mermaids, but there was a chance they would get caught by bad people and forced to expose this secret, which, of course, I hope would never happen.
「I’m sorry, Granny, but the thing is… Umm… I used the secret technique used by my family for generations. If I show it to someone else, my great-great-grandfather in heaven would be mad. So…」(Kako)
「Hya hya hya! I see, I see. I understand. I heard that humans hide their recipes or techniques to protect their family business.」(Granny)
「Y-yes, something like that. Umm, I can’t tell you how I make it, but I can tell you the ingredients.」(Kako)
「Are you sure?」(Granny)
「Yes.」(Kako)
It would be best for this village if its herbalist knew how to make the antidote. After all, I can’t just stay in this village forever.
I depend on my Synthesis ability to make the antidote, so it’s pretty easy for me, but Granny is an experienced herbalist, so as long as she knows the ingredients, I think she can figure it out how to mix them herself.
「I used various plants that grow on this island, but one thing you need to know is that I use some contaminated ones.」(Kako)
「You used contaminated plants?」(Granny)
Granny looked confused.
「Yes. It’s dangerous to consume them as they are, but with the right amount, they can be used as an ingredient to make the antidote. You need to be very careful when you add them.」(Kako)
「I see… Contaminated plants, huh? I’ve never thought of using them. That’s probably why I can’t make the medicine.」(Granny)
Well, normally you would have never thought of that. I got such an idea from a manga.
「Thank you for telling me this, Kako. You’re such a sweet and genius girl. So genius that I’m worried some bad people would try to kidnap you.」(Granny)
Granny talked as if she were a grandma worrying about her granddaughter’s safety. Honestly, it doesn’t feel bad at all.
I wonder how she would react if I told her I was kidnapped once.
No, I think I’ll just keep it for myself.
「Well then, you need a place to work, don’t you? I’ll lend you my workshop. Follow me.」(Granny)
「Thank you. But… How about Roan-san?」(Kako)
「Ughhh….. 」(Roan)
He was still moaning in pain on the ground.
「Hmph! That fool is a warrior. He won’t die just from a fragile woman’s punch in the stomach. Just leave him. Let’s go.」(Granny)
「U, un…」(Kako)
Sorry, Roan-san…
◆◆◆
Leaving Roan in the village square, Granny took me to her house in the deeper part of the cave. It was made of piles of stones and was too small to call a house, to be honest.
Inside, there were many conch shells that seemed to contain various kinds of liquid, dried herbs hanging on the walls and ceiling, and tools made of stone and wood.
「You can use this room and the tools you need. I will wait outside. Don’t worry, I won’t peek.」(Granny)
「Alright. Thank you, Granny.」(Kako)
After she left me alone in this room, now it’s time to get to work. I just have to repeat the process I’ve remembered, so it will be quick.
First, I mixed the juice extracted from contaminated maizen grass with the right amount of water and then mixed the result with the potion I got from Granny. I did all the mixing with my Synthesis ability, so it was finished in just a few minutes.
「That was quick. It’s done, but I used potion for mermaids this time. I hope the result is not different.」(Kako)
There’s only one way to find out.
I held the result, which I put into a conch shell, and then appraised it.
《Failed Lost Potion Antidote (mermaid version): The antidote that can neutralize the toxins from the failed product of Lost Potion. It’s less bitter for mermaids, but much bitter for humans.》
「Oh? I did it!」(Kako)
The difference is not significant; only the level of bitterness is different.
It’s still bitter, but not as bitter as the one I made with human potion. At least for mermaids.
Now that I’ve confirmed that it’s okay to use mermaid potion, I continued my work and mass-produced the antidote.
I didn’t think it would be over this quickly. No trial and error whatsoever. This is great.
「Time to report to Granny!」(Kako)
After I made enough antidote, I got out of the room and approached Granny, who was sitting next to the river.
「Granny, it’s done!」(Kako)
「What!? That was quick! You didn’t make just one, did you?」(Granny)
「No. I made enough for the remaining sick people.」(Kako)
「Really? It hasn’t even been ten minutes, and you’ve already made that many? Your secret family technique must be very impressive!」(Granny)
「That’s… Yeah, haha… Ahaha…」(Kako)
Ugh, she’s getting even more suspicious of me…
I hope she won’t persistently ask me how I did it.
「Anyway, Granny, I think we should distribute them to the sick people now. The sooner the better.」(Kako)
「Hya hya hya! Looks like our sweet girl can’t wait to save the people. Alright, I will take you to them.」(Granny)
「Un!」(Kako)
We left Granny’s house and walked around the village to see the remaining sick people.
