Chapter 1-24 : Escape Through The Forest (part 1)

 

Synthesis!

As soon as I activated my Synthesis Skill, the small flower pot in my left hand and the part of the wall I was touching with my right hand glowed for a second and combined into a large earthen jar.

「…Ohh!」(Kako)

Now that I successfully made a hole in the wall, I looked forward and saw the outside.

Thank god! This room is above the ground!

I stuck my head into the hole and looked around.

It was night, so I could hardly see things, but somehow I could tell that this building was surrounded by trees.

Hold on… Am I in the forest? I thought I was still in the town.

「Oi, I think I saw light leaking from the storage room!」(scary man B)

「Light? Let’s go check inside!」(scary man C)

Oh, shoot! They’re coming!

The light produced by my Synthesis Skill seemed to leak through the small gaps of the door.

Without wasting any more time, I slipped through the hole.

This dark forest somehow reminded me of the forest where I woke up in this world.

I can barely see things… And… What if there are dangerous monsters around here? They might attack me…

I continued running while stretching my hands forward to avoid hitting trees.

「You hear the man! Go after her!」(scary man A)

No way! They can already tell where I am!? Those men act fast!

When I was hiding in the storage room, I saw three men looking for me, but judging from their voices just now I think there were more than three of themー Five, maybe six people including the magician.

I didn’t know where I was heading but I decided to run even faster. My first priority is to lose those scary men.

Thanks to my leather armor, I was able to avoid getting my skin scratched by branches and bushes.

Because of that, I could increase my running speed without worry.

However, no matter how fast I ran, I couldn’t beat adults with well-built bodies and athletic senses.

「I see her! Over there!」(scary man)

One of the pursuers spotted me and ran faster toward me. The other pursuers were following him from behind.

No, no, no, no! What should I do!?

Can I do something? Think, Kako! Think!

ーThat’s right! I think it will at least buy me some time!

While keeping on running, I held my magic bag upside down, stuck my hand inside it, and started taking out the random items I took from the storage room earlier.

Because the path was kind of uphill, the random items such as big jars, wooden boxes, pieces of rusted plate armor, and other things rolled down and hit the pursuers.

Some of them were hit in the legs and some others were hit in the stomach.

While they were holding their legs and stomach, groaning in pain, I continued running as fast as I could.

However, the pursuers were not wasting their time. They immediately got up and started chasing me again.

When they got close, I threw random stuff at them again.

I did it again and again, but it didn’t last long.

「I think she’s out of bullets!」
「Nice! Don’t miss this chance! Catch her!」(scary men)

As soon as they realized that I ran out of ammunition, they dashed toward me.

I didn’t have a choice but to keep running while thinking about other things I could do to stop those men.

Just when I thought that things wouldn’t get any worse, suddenly I heard a growl.

I encountered a monster…

When the monster’s appearance came into my sight, I couldn’t help but stop running.

Fortunately, the pursuers also stopped. It seemed that they were afraid of the monster too.

After all, it was a huge monster about four meters tall. Twice as tall as an adult man.

I couldn’t see it well because there was no source of light other than the pursuers’ torches. However, I could somewhat tell that it was something like a werewolf. It has hands and sharp, big claws reflecting the torches’ light.

Oh, god… Now I’m stuck between these scary men who want to kidnap me and a monster that might eat me alive.

Going with those men might be a wise choice here… But!

「Is she going to fight it?」
「Hey, girl, don’t be stupid! You’ll die!」(scary men)

No, I’m not going to fight it. My plan is to dodge its attack, pass it, and run as fast as I can.

If I can do that, this monster might then play with these child kidnappers, giving me a chance to get away from here!

I spread my legs a bit, drew my dagger, and held my buckler forward.

My breath was heavy and my legs were shivering out of fear, but I still decided to get into a fighting stance.

Those men dashed forward, trying to catch me, but they were too late!

I rushed toward the monster. To be exact, I rushed toward the side of the monster, trying to pass it.

However, as I expected, the monster didn’t seem to want to let me get away.

I was ready to dodge its attack, but…

It seemed that I was too optimistic…

The monster moved much much quicker than I thought.

It hit me with its big, sharp claws.
